Farewell to Gore Vidal

Literary giant, Gore Vidal died yesterday at his Hollywood Hills home. The 86 year-old author died of complications from pneumonia. Vidal served as first-mate on a supply ship in the U.S. Army during World War II (1943-46), and his first novel, Williwaw, was published while Vidal was still in the Army. In 1948, he scandalized critics and readers alike by publishing The City and the Pillar, which was one of the first American novels to feature and describe homosexuality in a positive manner.
